Water Damage Prevention

abbate-insurance-flood-new-havenWater backing up into your house can be a very serious issue. Along with trying to salvage any items that were damaged by the rising water, you may also have to deal with mold and mildew issues. Water backup happens when the amount of water that is around the foundation of your home is more than your removal systems are able to handle. Water backup can occur when sewer systems overflow through the drains in your basement or when surface water starts to seep through the foundation of your home. To ensure that you do not have to deal with any water backup issues, keep these prevention tips in mind.

  • Regularly maintain all downspouts and gutters, making sure that they are free of any leaves or other debris. If you find any sagging areas, make sure to repair them as soon as possible.
  • Check your gutter water capacity to see just how much rain it can handle. After it has been raining heavily for 15 minutes, if your gutters are overflowing, you may need to add more downspouts.
  • Ensure that all of your downspouts are extended at least ten feet away from your house so that the water does not come back onto the foundation of your home.
  • If needed, re-landscape your yard and adjust the irrigation system so that the water will flow away from the foundation of your house.
  • Install a sump pump that has replacement warnings and a battery backup to help drain away storm water and subsurface groundwater.
  • Run your sump pump every couple of months and clean it at least once a year to ensure that it is running properly.
  • Install standpipes and backflow valves at all of your basement drain locations to prevent the backflow of any sanitary sewer water.
