Top negotiation tips for women.
Whether it’s for a home, a raise, a new job salary or otherwise, there comes a time where you may need to negotiate tactfully. Money is power, and women aren’t getting their share of it. To help, we’ve rounded up some must-know tips for women to make the most of their negotiations.
Prepare
Do your homework. If you’re negotiating the purchase of a home, conduct an inspection and then use the report if it reveals imperfections. If it’s for salary, talk to people in the profession and use sites such as Glassdoor for transparency on figure earnings. When it comes to naming a number, figure out the highest amount your employer would pay (not the average salary), and then add at least 10 percent to it as a starting point.
Know where you stand
Are you competing for a job against a dozen other qualified professionals or has the position been open for months? Has the house been sitting on the market without any offers or is there hot competition? Knowing where you stand can provide insight as to what steps are appropriate.
Ask!
Many women don’t get job promotions, discounts, and savings because they simply don’t ask. Now is the time to know your worth and go for it. If you don’t ask, you don’t get! Simply asking is half the battle – and you may find that you’re more successful than you first thought.
