National Blood Donor Month
January is National Blood Donor Month, which is one of the easiest ways that you can give back to those in need this year. National Blood Donor Month has been celebrated since 1970 as a way to raise awareness for the need of blood donations during the winter and all year long. It is also an excellent way to recognize and celebrate blood donors who have done their part to save lives.
Each time you donate blood you have the chance to save up to three lives. There is always a need for blood donations, especially type O negative, since it can be transferred to anybody, no matter their blood type. Each time you donate blood you can feel good knowing that you have helped someone’s life.
The donation process is fast and easy. After a mini-physical to check your hemoglobin level, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature, the actual donation process only takes about 20 minutes. If you are donating plasma, platelets, or red cells, the donation process can take up to 2 hours. After about a pint of blood has been drawn, you will get to relax for 15 minutes and enjoy something to drink and a delicious snack. You can go back to your normal, daily activities after you are done donating.
