How Are You Observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

How Are You Observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month?October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

October is covered in pink as it is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! This is the month for women to perform self-examinations, book a mammogram, for women who have this cancer to get additional support, and for awareness to be raised. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, overtaken only by lung cancer. The good news is that with more knowledge and the latest science, the rates of breast cancer deaths are declining.

There are many factors that may contribute to one’s breast cancer risk. While a small portion of this risk is hereditary, lifestyle continues to be one of the most influencing factors. You can help lower your risk of this cancer by being a healthy weight, limit your consumption of alcohol, not smoking, and eliminating dairy from your diet. By making small changes toward a healthier lifestyle, a woman can help lower her risk of developing breast cancer. It is recommended that all women over the age of 40 (unless otherwise stated by your doctor) have a mammogram performed annually.

You can help to increase awareness in your community to show support during this month. Whether you wear the symbolic looped pink ribbon, share literature on your social media, or put a poster at your office about breast cancer, you can help to educate and support women.

Whatever you choose to do this October to raise awareness about breast cancer, your efforts will make a difference.
