House FloodFlood Insurance Basics

Your existing homeowners insurance policy will provide coverage for many unfortunate situations. However, it will not provide protection from any peril that you encounter. A home insurance policy will not provide coverage for damage that is caused during a flood. The only way to protect your home and belongings is to invest in a separate flood insurance policy.

When looking for the right flood insurance policy, make sure to keep these facts in mind to ensure that you invest in the proper policy for your needs.

  • No homeowner’s insurance policy will provide coverage for the damage that is caused by a flood. Only a flood insurance policy will do that.
  • According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, a flood is defined as a “general and temporary condition where two or more acres of normally dry land, or two or more properties, are inundated with water or mudflow.”
  • FEMA also points out that a flood can be caused from many different situations, including overtopped levees, hurricanes, rapid accumulation of rainfall, and clogged or outdated drainage systems.
  • It does not matter if your house is not in a designated “flood zone.” No matter where your home is located, a flood can damage it.
  • Keep in mind that there is a 30-day waiting period before flood insurance will kick in. Which means if you are waiting until storm season to buy a policy, it may be too late, and you will be left covering the damages out of your own pocket.
